Summary:

Trimac Transportation, headquartered in Calgary, AB, is looking for a Legal Intern to assist with Trimac's legal research, analysis, writing, drafting, document management, contract negotiation, and litigation management. The legal intern is responsible for operating with a high degree of autonomy, initiative, and judgment while providing a high level of legal, business, and strategic advice on legal matters. Doing so requires the development of an understanding of the Company's bulk hauling, brokerage, and associated businesses.

The Intern will be reporting to the VP Legal and the legal team. The legal department intern will assist with, as appropriate and/or determined by the VP Legal, delivery of the following essential duties/responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing accurate, relevant, and timely advice to the legal team and various business units, affiliates, and staff on a variety of legal topics relating to the bulk hauling and brokerage sectors, and/or associated services.

  • Negotiating, drafting, and reviewing various corporate, commercial, sales, HR, IT, and other contracts and agreements.

  • Managing and mitigating legal risks through the design, drafting, and implementation of, or guidance related to applicable policies and procedures.

  • Promoting legal, compliance, and risk management best practices throughout the company.

  • Facilitating compliance by various business units with laws, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to the business.

  • Communicating with and managing third parties such as external counsel or auditors.

  • Designing and delivering legal training to business units.

  • Litigation and regulatory compliance oversight.

  • Monitoring and staying up to date with changes to legislation, particularly about laws, rules, and regulations that directly affect Trimac's business and specific industry.

  • Other projects as needed.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written.

  • A keen eye for detail with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Possess strong analytical skills and critical thinking - uses logic and reason to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, and approaches to issues.

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Demonstrated strength in project and teamwork.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Possesses and demonstrates the ability to perform assigned tasks in a manner that adheres to the Company's Safety, Health, Environmental and Security policies.

Requirements/Education Studies:

  • Successful completion of their first full academic year at an accredited Canadian law school
